COMMUNITY GARDEN
A community garden sponsored by TRUNA is located at the bottom of Stancil Dr. on both sides of the street. Currently, there are 20 plots under cultivation by more than 20 households. Gardeners are growing a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. About half of the beds are organic. Future plans include adding berry bushes. TRUNA received the 2009 Environmental Awareness Award from the City of Greenville in the Organization Category for its community garden.
Any TRUNA member with a current paid membership may rent a garden plot, depending on availability. The annual fee is $40 per 800-square-foot plot per growing season to cover the expenses of running the garden. In addition, each plot holder shares in the cost of water supplied through a hook up with Greenville Utilities.
If you are interested in having or sharing a plot in 2012, please contact the community garden coordinator, Sam Uzzell, 252-752-7498.
If plots are unavailable on Stancil St., there are still several flood buyout properties available to lease in the College View neighborhood. Click on the map to find the locations. Lots outlined in red are currently leased. The city has several lots north of the river as well. Note the following restrictions:
Lots may only be used for open space or gardening.
No permanent structures may be constructed.
Fences, composting devises, portable storage sheds, etc. are permitted.
Leases are typically written for increments of 5 years at a cost of one dollar per year.
